IMPACT CHURCH
Pastoral Transition
Protect a Legacy, Preserve Confidence, “Normalize Next”
OUR TASK
Impact Church engaged CNBetter Media at a critical moment of transition. Founder and Lead Pastor Olu Brown was preparing to announce his retirement from the pulpit—not due to scandal or controversy, but as a purposeful evolution into global leadership, consulting, and entrepreneurship.
Given the sensitivity of the moment—including the timing following Pastor Olu’s recent divorce—the church leadership was deeply concerned about misinterpretation, speculation, and reputational risk. They needed more than publicity; they needed absolute clarity, protection, and trust—internally and externally.
CNBetter Media was tasked with designing and executing a comprehensive crisis prevention, succession communications, and visibility strategy that would:
- Safeguard Pastor Olu’s reputation
- Maintain confidence within the congregation
- Ensure leadership continuity
- Control the narrative across media and digital platforms
- Normalize pastoral transition as purpose-driven—not problematic
OUR SOLUTION
CNBetter Media implemented a multi-layered, high-security communications strategy designed to manage perception, eliminate speculation, and guide the church through a seamless leadership transition. This effort extended far beyond traditional PR into organizational risk management and executive communications architecture.
Key components of our approach included:
Crisis Communications & Contingency Planning
- Developed a formal crisis communications plan with tiered alert levels (Ground Zero → Crisis Escalation)
- Identified and trained approved spokespeople
- Created holding statements for every foreseeable scenario
- Established internal notification systems and escalation protocols
- Implemented real-time monitoring of media and social conversations
Internal Alignment & Message Control
- Identified high-level internal stakeholders and placed NDAs to protect confidentiality
- Created core message architecture, FAQs, and talking points to ensure alignment
- Equipped staff, leadership, and digital teams with copy-and-paste response scripts for live and online engagement
- Ensured messaging consistency across pulpit announcements, staff communications, and social platforms
Succession & Transition Strategy
- Built and branded the transition campaign: Normalizing NEXT™
- Developed messaging to affirm stability, continuity, and future leadership
- Created bios, boilerplates, and positioning materials for both outgoing and incoming pastoral leadership
- Designed a phased communications timeline spanning pre-announcement, announcement day, and post-transition
Executive Media Training
- Conducted in-depth media training with Pastor Olu to prepare for:
- Pulpit announcement
- Press interviews
- Sensitive questioning
- Narrative redirection and message bridging
Announcement-Day Execution
- Scripted and produced the full run of show for the announcement
- Developed video integration strategy featuring trusted church leaders to reinforce confidence
- Created real-time digital engagement scripts for livestream moderators
- Managed press coordination and onsite coverage
Media Relations & Thought Leadership
- Secured local press coverage including Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Atlanta Voice, and broadcast outlets
- Positioned Pastor Olu for broader conversations around:
- Pastoral transition
- Succession planning
- Leadership evolution
- Normalizing “next chapters” without scandal
OUR RESULTS
The Normalizing NEXT™ campaign achieved its core objective: a seamless, dignified, and respected leadership transition—without crisis, confusion, or reputational damage.
Key outcomes included:
- Successful announcement received with clarity, trust, and confidence by the congregation
- Zero negative press or speculative narratives
- Strong internal alignment across leadership, staff, and volunteers
- Local media coverage reinforcing the intentionality and integrity of the transition
- Pastor Olu positioned as a forward-thinking leader, not a reactive one
- Impact Church affirmed as stable, prepared, and future-focused
Most importantly, the campaign transformed what could have been a moment of uncertainty into a model case for proactive succession planning, crisis prevention, and faith-based leadership transitions.
